2020 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers

Thursday, January 9th, 2020

Major league baseball did announce that they would be holding the World Baseball Classic in 2021. That is one year after the Olympics, where two remaining teams are still undecided to be one of the six competitors for the Olympics. One of those Olympic qualifiers is to be scheduled in Arizona from March 22-26.

It could be a busy time for baseball in Arizona in March. With spring training and the Olympic qualifiers and now also the two World Baseball Classic qualifiers to be held in Arizona. Where will they find all the fields?

Baseball Reference.com shows that there will be two World Baseball Classic qualifiers in Arizona. The first will be held from March 12-17 and the second from March 18-26. Below are the teams that will be participating in those qualifiers.

March 12-17

Brazil, Germany, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Philippines and South Africa

March 18-26

Czech Republic, France, United Kingdom, Pakistan, Panama and Spain.

The top two teams from each of these pools will advance to the World Baseball Classic for 2021.

What got me interested in this was an article appearing in baseballasia.org that talked about the rise in baseball in the Philippines. The Philippine Amateur Baseball Association President talked about participating in the WBC qualifiers in March 18-25, which are different dates from what the Philippines appears to be scheduled in according to Baseball Reference.com. They also talk about adding Tim Tebow, who was born in the Philippines to their roster. Tim Tebow has recently been invited to the New York Mets spring training tryouts and they train in Florida.

So there is not a lot of publicity being issued on these qualifiers but they appear to be happening some time in March. That could be a good time to travel to Arizona to watch some International baseball. Poor Nicaragua appears to be scheduled to play in both the Olympic Qualifiers in Arizona and the World Baseball Classic Qualifiers in Arizona. Good way to save on travel costs, provided the tournaments are not scheduled during the same week.

Sri Lanka finished undefeated in the tournament.

Taiwan Upsets Korea in Asian Games

Monday, August 27th, 2018

It is still early, but in the opening round of the Asian games Taiwan beat Korea 2-1. Taiwan was bolstered by two player from each of their four China Professional Baseball League teams. The rest of the players are amateurs. Korea has a full roster of players from the Korean Baseball Organization. That did not stop Taiwan from winning.

The other results were not so surprising. Japan clobbered Pakistan 15-0. Japan has a complete roster of amateur players drawn from college or the industrial league. They have no players from the Nippon Professional Baseball. This still did not hurt them as they played an inexperienced Pakistan team.

Thailand won an early round qualifier pool, beating Sri Lanka and Laos to advance to the final eight. They were a bit overmatched against China, losing 15-0.

Hong Kong downed Indonesia 7-4.

SriLanka Wins West Asia Tournament

Wednesday, March 1st, 2017

It turned into a five team tournament when the Indian baseball team could not obtain visas in time to travel to Pakistan to play in the tournament. Sri Lanka then surprised the competition, going undefeated including a 4-2 win over Pakistan. Pakistan has traditionally had an easy time with this tournament, winning the last four.

Sri Lanka had an easy time defeating Iran 22-0, then rolled over Nepal 11-0. The game against Pakistan was tied 2-2 until the bottom of the eighth when Sri Lanka scored two runs to give them the victory. Both Pakistan and Sri Lanka are eligible to compete in the Asian Baseball Championship held in New Taipei City in September. Japan, Taiwan, China, Korea, Hong Kong and the Philippines are the six other teams who have qualified for the tournament.

Iran won a slugfest over Nepal 10-6 to finish in third place.

India Constructs First Baseball Field

Friday, February 24th, 2017

India has constructed its first baseball field, six acres of green that will host five international trainers to improve the Indians baseball skills. The Co-founder of Grand Slam Baseball Raunag Sahni helped support the development of the field along with major league baseball and Play Global.

It may also one day be used to host the West Asia baseball tournament, which is currently being played and hosted by Pakistan. Six teams are entered in the tournament, India, Sri Lanka, Iraq, Nepal, Iran and Pakistan. The winner of the tournament will compete in the Asia Baseball Championships held this year. Pakistan is the defending champ of the West Asia baseball tournament, but there skill level still falls far below that of Japan, Korea and Taiwan.

Japan Wins 12 and Under Asian Tournament

Tuesday, December 13th, 2016

Japan continued their dominance in baseball with a 4-1 win over Korea to win the 12 and under Asian tournament championship. The win qualifies them for the World Championship to be held in Taiwan in 2017 between July 28 to August 7. Korea also qualified for the World Championship for their second place finish.

The number four ranked Taiwan, who won the last under 12 Asian tournament took the last spot (third place) by beating the hosts China 4-0. The Philippines between a surprisingly strong Pakistan team 3-2 to take fifth place. Indonesia took seventh place by beating Hong Kong 6-5.

Israel Advances to Winner’s Bracket with Shutout

Saturday, September 24th, 2016

Israel 1 Brazil 0

Runs were scarce in the winner’s bracket match. Corey Baker pitched five innings of shutout ball, allowing just one hit and three walks to set the stage for Israel in their shutout win over Brazil. Four other pitchers extended the shutout with Brad Goldberg retiring the side in order in the ninth to rack up the save.

Bo Takahashi threw the first four innings for Brazil and allowed the only run of the game. Murilo Gouvea relieved Takahashi and silenced the Israeli bats for three innings.

Nate Freiman delivered a lead off double in the fourth inning that led to the only run. An error by first baseman Dante Bichette moved Freiman to third where he scored on a sacrifice fly by Cody Decker.

Brazil rallied in the 8th with back to back two out singles but came up short. Ryan Sherriff came on in relief of Jeremy Bleich to retire the last hitter of the inning.

Great Britain 14 Pakistan 0

Not much of a game here with a six run fifth putting the game out of reach. Champ Stuart drove in three runs and Albert Cartwright crossed the plate three times, hitting two triples to lead the Brit offense. Pakistan could not overcome 14 hits and 8 walks.

Brazil and Israel Win WBC Qualifier Openers in Brooklyn

Friday, September 23rd, 2016

The last qualifier country is being determined in Brooklyn this weekend. Brazil and Israel got off to good starts.

Brazil 10 Pakistan 0

Pakistan is the only country of the four who have no players in the minor leagues in the United States. They are coming here to compete and learn to get better. Brazil trounced them in the opener 10-0 in a game shortened to seven innings because of the slaughter rule. Jean Tome pitched 5.1 innings of three hit ball to quiet the Pakistan bats. Juan Carlos Muniz smashed a two run homerun in the fifth inning to extend the lead for Brazil from 4-0 to 6-0. Pakistan got a good lesson in the game today.

Israel 5 Great Britain 2

Michael Roth pitched a great game for Great Britain, working six innings of one run ball and departing with a 2-1 lead. When the Brits went to their bullpen the Israeli bats came alive.

The first two hitters Rhett Wiseman (single) and Scott Burcham (double) ripped hits off reliever Vaughn Harris. Mike Meyers hit a fly ball out deep enough to left field to score Wiseman and tie the game up. Zach Borenstein lined a single to right field to give Israel a 3-2 lead. Israel scored two more insurance runs when Ike Davis singled and Cody Decker hit a sacrifice fly to up the lead to 5-2.

Great Britain had just taken the lead in the top of the seventh after a Champ Stuart double with a wild pitch advancing him to third. Todd Isaacs drove him in with a sacrifice fly.

Brad Goldberg came on in the ninth to close out the game. He walked the leadoff hitter and then coughed up a double to Isaacs to put runners on second and third with no out. After a visit to the mound Goldberg ended the game with a popup and two strikeouts.

Great Britain will play Pakistan in a losers bracket game while Brazil faces off against Israel in the winners bracket contest. The winner of the losers bracket game will play the loser of the winners bracket contest.
