Escogido Wins Series del Caribe Birth

Wednesday, January 27th, 2016

After losing the first four games Licey needed to win five in a row to overcome their deficit in the best of nine series. They could only win one game. Escogido routed them in game six 8-4 to win the Dominican Winter League championship, staying home to represent the Dominican Republic in the Series del Caribe.

Licey went with their ace Yunesky Maya. He worked through the Leones lineup pretty easily in the first two innings, retiring six of the seven hitters he faced. In the third inning he gave up four consecutive singles and a walk to the only five hitters he faced in the inning, dropping his record to 0-4 in the playoffs. The Leones scored four runs in the inning to take a 4-1 lead. It was a lead they would never relinquish.

Another four spot in the sixth inning put the game out of reach, the Leones again spraying four singles to score four runs. Eight of their 12 hits were bunched together in the two four run outbursts. Pedro Lopez and Eury Perez led all players with three hits each for Escogido, both players scoring a run each in the four run innings.

Series del Caribe Homerun Derby Packed with Stars

Wednesday, January 27th, 2016

The game itself may lack the stars, but the homerun derby scheduled for February 3 should bring out the fans. The lineup includes 40 year old retired Vladimir Guerrero, David Ortiz, Miguel Cabrera, Robinson Cano and the Cuban slugger Alfredo Despaigne. This event may bring more people out than the game itself. All they need is Adrian Gonzalez to represent Mexico and get Juan Gonzalez out of retirement to represent Puerto Rico and they would have all the countries participating in the Series del Caribe represented in the Homerun Derby by one of their stars.

Sanchez Leads Aragua to Tie Series

Tuesday, January 26th, 2016

Carlos Sanchez appears to have lost his job at second base for the White Sox with the trade of Todd Frazier moving Brett Lawrie to second. The way he is hitting in the winter leagues the White Sox may want to find him a position for him to play. Sanchez slugged a two run homer in the seventh to give Aragua a 6-2 win over Magallanes and an evening of their series at two games apiece. Sanchez is hitting .471 for the playoffs.

Jose Oyervides went five innings to pick up the win. Ronald Belisario pitched the final inning to close out the victory.

Mazatlan to Series del Caribe

Tuesday, January 26th, 2016

A two out error by Mexicali shortstop Ramon Urias gave Cyle Hankerd an opportunity to be a hero. Hankerd had already contributed a solo homerun in the second inning. A Justin Green steal of second resulted in an intentional walk to Esteban Quiroz setting the table for Hankerd. Mexicali brought in Esmailin Caridad to get the last out but Hankerd greeted him with a walk off single to left field to score Green with the winning run and an appearance in the Series del Caribe in the Dominican Republic.

Mexicali scored their first two runs on solo shots from Chris Roberson to lead off the game and C.J. Retherford two outs later. Paul Leon drove in two runs for Mazatlan with a triple in the fourth. Steven Hensley picked up his second win of the playoffs with two shutout innings.

A crowd of 15,500 celebrated the Venados four games to one series win over Mexicali.

MLB Looking at London in 2017

Tuesday, January 26th, 2016

The NFL has played a few games in London. Now major league baseball is looking at playing there. The time frame is expected to be 2017 and will not be an opener since the weather in London in April is not conducive for baseball. The Olympic stadium is being looked at as a possible venue. No teams have been decided on but major league baseball will want to make a good impression by providing London their best.

Myworld believes the most impact MLB can make for baseball in Europe would be to play a game in the Netherlands. The interest would be greater though they do not have a stadium to seat 40,000.

Marte Walkoff Lifts Aragua to First Win

Monday, January 25th, 2016

In the bottom of the 12th Alfredo Marte connected off new pitcher Gabriel Alfaro to carry the game winning run over the right field fence to give Aragua a dramatic 5-4 first win after two losses over Magallanes. Trailing 4-1 going into the bottom of the ninth Aragua rallied for three runs to tie the game and send it into extra frames. Four straight singles scored the first two runs, Carlos Sanchez driving in both runs with a bases loaded single. Aragua tied it when Alfredo Marte grounded into a fielder’s choice. Neither team could mount a rally in the extra frames until Marte unloaded on his pitch into right field.

Luis Antonio Rodriguez drove in all four runs for Magallanes with his three hits. Adrian Salcedo was denied a victory after pitching six innings and only allowing one unearned run. Ronald Belisario pitched the last three innings for Aragua, allowing no hits and walking one to get the victory.

Mayaguez Wins Pitcher’s Duel

Monday, January 25th, 2016

Runs were scarce in the Indios 1-0 win over Santurce. Andrew Barbosa worked the first six innings allowing just four hits. Giovanni Soto completed two innings of one hit ball before turning it over to Fernando Cabrera in the ninth to complete the victory. Roy Merritt started for Santurce and allowed the lone run.

Mayaguez could only find three hits in their bats. They got one of those hits in the sixth inning that led to the lone run. A leadoff hit batsman started the inning and with the bases loaded another hit by pitch forced the lone run home.

The best opportunity Santurce had to score was in the sixth when they loaded the bases with two outs after a hit by pitch. Jorge Padilla could not drive in the run, flying out to center field.

Mazatlan One Win From Mexican Winter League Championship

Monday, January 25th, 2016

Walter Silva tossed four innings of one hit shut out ball to lead Mazatlan to a 2-0 win over Mexicali, turning the ball over to six pitchers to complete the four hit shutout. Mazatlan now leads the series three games to one.

Esteban Quiroz drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Paul Leon drove in the second run with a double in the sixth. Steve Hensley retired the side in order in the ninth to pick up the save.

Licey Salvages One Game in Dominican Championship

Monday, January 25th, 2016

Yesterday Pedro Lopez was the hero. Interesting how one day can turn you from hero to goat. His error in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded allowed Licey to score the game winning run for a 7-6 win, their first after losing the first four in the best of nine championship series. Yamaico Navarro, home from Korea and soon to be living in Japan got the inning started with a single.

Escogido rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 6-6. Alex Valdez coaxed a one out walk and Escogido pitcher Fernando Rodney was ejected from the game. He had retired Licey in order in the bottom of the eighth. A Lew Ford single moved Valdez to third where he scored on a ground out to the pitcher, Ford advancing to second. Moises Sierra chopped an infield single to third, Ford scoring from second to tie the game. Escogido loaded the bases on a single and hit by pitch but Pedro Ciriaco could not drive in the go ahead run, striking out to end the inning. Pedro had singled in his three previous times up.

Navarro finished the game with three hits, scoring twice and driving in one. Jairo Asencio who blew the save by giving up two runs got credit for the win.
