Puerto Rico Opens their Season

The Puerto Rican League opened their season and myworld will provide updates on that league on Saturday.  The first update will be next Saturday.  So the AFL on Sunday, Dominican League on Monday, Venezuelan League on Wednesday and the Mexican league on Friday.

Mayaguez got a 3-run homer from Cuban refugee Johan Limonata to give them a 6-1 lead and the Indios were able to hang on to beat the Arecibo Lobos 6-4 in the opener.  Mayaguez got four innings of shutout ball from Hiram Burgos to lead them to victory.  Burgos struck out five and gave up just three hits in his four innings of work.  Bill Simas pitched the ninth and though he put the tying run on base, he was able to get Michel Abreu to ground out to get the save.  Bill Pulsipher got the start for the Lobos and was tagged for three runs in three innings of work.  He had trouble finding the plate, walking four hitters.

In the other game, Carolina downed Ponce 7-3, getting three hits, two of them doubles and three RBIs from Mexican League veteran Pedro Valdes.  They also got two hits and two RBIs from minor league journeyman Ruben Gotay.  Willie Collazo pitched five innings of one run ball to get the win, while Jerome Williams pitched two innings to pick up the save.  Jerome didn’t allow a runner to reach base in the seven batters he faced.  Philip Humber got the start and the loss for the Leones.  He gave up two runs in three innings of work in the start.
