Caracas Takes 3-0 Lead in Venezuelan Playoffs
Defending champion Caracas took a 3-0 lead into the round robin, downing Margartia twice after beating La Guaria in the opener. Caracas got a solo homerun from Carlos Maldanado in the third and a sacrifice fly from him in the sixth to be the difference in the 5-3 win. The Leones also scored a run on a wild pitch and another after a throwing error. Caracas was able to add to their offense by picking up the best hitter in the league, Wilson Ramos. Armando Galarraga got the win by going six innings and giving up three runs. Juan Gutierrez picked up the save.
In tonight’s game it was the new addition, Wilson Ramos that went deep once and also scored three runs after two walks to give Caracas an easy 8-3 win. Luis Maza slapped four hits to drive in two to also help with the offense. The Bravos pitchers helped Caracas out by issuing eight free passes in the game.
Zulia and Magallanes appeared to have played a football game on Tuesday night with Zulia winning by a touchdown 19-12 in openers for both teams. Leading homerun hitter Ernesto Meija led the way with two doubles, two singles and a homerun to drive in five runs. Kenny Perez drove in three with his three hits and also scored four runs. Carlos Gonzalez and Alex Romero went deep for Zulia while Magallanes got homeruns from Pablo Sandoval and Miguel Montero. The Andrus brothers, Erold and Elvis combined for five hits with Erold getting three of the hits.
In the Wednesday night game Magallanes pinned La Guaira with their second loss 9-6. Edgardo Alfonzo led the way with three RBIs on two doubles and a single and Ronny Cedeno had three RBIs. Jean Machi picked up his first save in the playoffs. Jay Gibbons went deep for La Guaira in a losing cause.
