Top 30 International Prospects

Baseball America has listed their top 30 international prospects eligible for signing on July 2.  Normally, most of these prospects are from the Dominican Republic and Venezuela.  This time, a player from Italy holds the number 12 spot on the list.  Marten Gasparaini played for the 15 and under Italian team and hit .419 with a slugging average of .710.  He stole six bases.  His performance a few days later on the 18 and under team, against older players was not as impressive (2 for 17), but major league scouts like him.

They feel he has better tools than Max Kepler from Germany.  Marten has more speed than Kepler but less power.  This should allow him to play a more valuable position in centerfield.  If Kepler fails to establish his power a corner outfield position may be difficult to win.  Gasparini already has his speed, though as players fill out and muscle up they may lose that speed.

Marten stands 6 foot and weighs 175.  You can see the list of prospects here:

Other players on that list not from Venezuela or the Dominican Repuplic include:

13. Erick Julio (RHP) - Colombia

14. Jesus Lopez (SS) - Nicaragua

16. Erling Moreno (RHP) - Colombia

23. Jen-ho Tseng (RHP) - Taiwan
