Licey are the 2008 Series del Caribe Champs

It wasn’t much of a game and the Aguilas pitching was horrible.  Alfredo Simon got lit up for 4 runs and 6 hits in a little over 3 innings and Fabio Castro followed him by giving up 3 hits and two runs without getting a batter out.  It had to be torture for the Aguilas fans.  The final score was Licey 8 Aguilas 2.  So much for my prediction of Aguilas being the champs.

Miguel Tejeda usually performs well in these tournaments, but for this one he hit only .208.  Most of his offense appeared opening night when he blasted two homeruns against Mexico.  After that he had two hits, a single and double and no RBIs.

Six Licey players got two hits and Eric Aybar finished the Caribbean Series with a .400 average.  The Angels are going to need that kind of production if they are going to turn the shortstop job over to him.  Ramon Ortiz had another exemplary performance, pitching in relief of Jose Capellan and tossing 5 shutout innings.  It extended his shutout streak to over 11 innings for the Series.

In a meaningless game that was played for pride, Mexico won their second straight game, beating Aragua 7-5.  Eight of the 12 runs were scored in the 9th inning, 5 by Obregon and 3 by Aragua.  The hitting star for Obregon was Albino Contreras, who got 3 hits to up his average to .563 for the Series.

Tommorow I will put together the All Series del Caribe Team.

The final standings:

Licey          5   1

Aragua       3   3

Obregon     2   4

Aragua       2   4
