European Championships - Day Three with Two No-Hitters

Myworld was in Camden Yards till past midnight so we are a little late with the results of the European championships. There were two no hitters in yesterday’s games, one at each location, including a perfect game seven inning affair.

Regensburg, Germany

Belgium 11 Sweden 0

Belgium got their first win with a six inning shutout from Thomas de Wolf. He did not allow a Swedish hit, but walked four and struck out nine. Robin Roevens drove in three runs to lead the offense. Sweden drops to 0-3.

Germany 9 Great Britain 0

Three pitchers combined for Germany’s nine inning shutout, Jan-Niclas Stoecklin doing most of the work with seven innings pitched. He gave up three hits and struck out 12. Philipp Howard drove in three runs from the leadoff spot. Shawn Larry came in to pinch run then hit a solo shot when called on to make his only at bat. Germany improved to 2-1 while Great Britain dropped to 1-2.

Italy 12 France 2

In a battle of the undefeateds Italy reigned supreme. France took a brief 2-1 lead after a Frederic Hanvi 2-run single in the top of the third. Italy pulled away after a grand slam homerun from Alberto Mineo in the bottom frame. For Mineo it was his second homerun of the tournament. Alex Liddi put the game away with a 3-run homer in the fourth to make it 8-2. Patrick Venditte got the last five outs for Italy.

Ostava, Czech Republic

Spain 12 Russia 0

Spain remained undefeated blasting Russia. Eric Gonzalez went six innings, giving up five hits to get the win. Fernando Martinez had a homerun for Spain and the top two hitters in the order, Daniel Martinez and Oscar Angulo each drove in three runs. Russia drops to 1-2.

Netherlands 11 Greece 0

Netherlands remained undefeated while Greece stayed winless in another shutout. Mike Bolsenbroek struck out 10 in a perfect game seven inning no hitter. Gianison Boekhoudt hit his third homerun of the tournament, Hanley Statia hit has second and Yurendell de Caster socked his first. De Caster was a triple short of hitting for the cycle, driving in four runs.

Czech Republic 13 Croatia 2

The Czechs bounced back after thier loss to the Netherlands to improve to 2-1, spanking the winless Croatian team. Croatia did get a solo shot from Mario Manojlov to highlight the game. Jakub Sladek went deep for the second time in the tournament and drove in four runs to lead the Czechs.
