European Championships - Day Four

This was the next to last day of pool play before the playoff rounds.

Regensburg, Germany

Belgium 5 Great Britain 0

Cedric Desmedt pitched a complete game nine inning shutout, allowing only three hits and four walks. He struck out six. Steven Delannoy and Jamie Verheylewegh each scored two runs from the top two spots in the order.

France 8 Sweden 3

France improved to 3-1 while Sweden remained winless. Leonel Cespedes struck out nine in his seven innings of work, turning to the bullpen for the last two innings. France improves to 3-1 while Sweden drops to 0-4.

Italy 5 Germany 1

Stefano Desmoni collected three hits to keep Italy undefeated in a tough test against Germany. Italy used four different pitchers to retire Germany.

Ostrava, Czech Republic

Croatia 10 Russia 3

Russia jumped out to a early 3-0 lead but a six run fourth iced it for Croatia, who picked up their first victory of the tournament. Andrija Tomic slugged a 3-run homer and Ivan Racic had a 2-run blast in the fourth inning, the only homeruns hit in the game. Racic finished the game driving in four runs. James Summers tossed a complete game, allowing three unearned runs.

Czech Republic 17 Greece 2

Another game and another slaughter against Greece. This time it was the hosts doing the battering. Jakub Sladek, Matej Hejma and Petr Cech each went deep for the Czech Republic. Each of the players contributed three RBIs to the victory. Greece has given up double digit runs in all four losses while Czech Republic improves to 3-1.

Netherlands 19 Spain 7

Netherlands advanced to 4-0 giving Spain their first loss. Spain shocked the vaunted Netherlands pitching staff by jumping off to an early 3-0 lead on a Jesus Golindano 3-run homer, his third of the tournament. They then went ahead 7-1 after homeruns by Fernando Martinez and Blake Ochoa in the third. Netherlands bats erupted, a grand slam by Yurendell de Caster in the fourth the big blow. Randolph Oduber went 5 for 5 from the leadoff spot with two homeruns, crossing the plate five times. Gianison Boekhoudt hit his fourth homerun of the tournament for Netherlands. The Spain pitching staff was a little wild, walking 13 Dutch to hand them the victory.
