A-Rod Leaves Cuba

Baseball America has reported that Isla de la Juventud shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez has left Cuba to pursue his major league dream and lottery ticket. The 21 year old won the rookie of the year and a gold glove award as a shortstop last year. The big question will be whether his bat hits enough to make it to the major leagues. Erisbel Arruebarrena carried a better bat in the Cuban league than Rodriguez and he is currently stagnated in the Dodgers minor league system, currently suspended.

At 21 years of age Rodriguez will be subject to international spending rules. It could be at least two years before a team can sign Rodriguez if he does not establish residency and register his intent to be subject to the international draft by Mid May. With all the Cuban players departing the island major league teams are going to have second thoughts about exceeding their salary cap last year and being restricted to $250,000 maximum offers this year.
