College Update

Eight of the number one seeds advanced to the super regionals. Four regionals were still to be decided. VCU was the only number 4 team to advance, the four other number fours in the yet to be decided regionals having been eliminated.

Lake Elsinore, California

Virginia advanced to the Super Regional with a 14-10 win over USC. USC had rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth to beat San Diego State 12-11 in the semi-finals. Jeremy Martinez double to right center to drive in two runs. Virginia won their game in 11 innings in the finals to remain undefeated, scoring five in the eleventh inning. The first four hitters in the Cavalier lineup scored 11 of the 14 runs.

Stillwater, Oklahoma

Arkansas advanced from this regional with a 4-3 win over St. Johns. Arkansas scored a run in the top of the ninth on a ground out, Brett McAfee scoring the go ahead run.

Springfield, Missouri

Missouri State was the first number one seed to advance to the super regional with a 3-2 win over Iowa. Jordan Knutsen went seven innings to get the win, allowing only three hits and two runs. He had a one hit shutout after seven but was removed in the eighth after giving up back to back singles. The bullpen allowed both runners to score but preserved the win.

Dallas, Texas

VCU was a fourth seed that advanced to the super regional. Dallas Baptist beat them 2-1 to take them to the final where VCU beat them 3-1. Sean Thompson worked five plus innings to get the win while Matt Lees finished the game off with the last 11 outs to get the save.

Tallahassee, Florida

Number one seed Florida State had an easy time over Charleston 8-1 to advance to the super regional. Quincy Nieporte drove in four runs with a homerun and single. Drew Carlton threw six plus innings of shutout ball, striking out nine to get the win.

Gainsville, Florida

Number one seed Florida also advanced with a 2-1 win over Florida Atlantic. Alex Faedo worked six innings to pick up the win.

Baton Rouge, Louisiana

LSU beat North Carolina, Wilmington 2-0, Jared Poche one out away from pitching a complete game shutout. Jake Fraley got three hits and drove in one of the three runs for LSU.

Houston, Texas

Louisiana Lafayette advanced beating Rice 5-2.

Champaign, Illinois

Illinois broke the game wide open with three runs in the ninth to defeat Wright State 8-4 in the final. David Kerian hit his 17th homerun of the year to drive in two. The last three hitters in the Illinois lineup each drove in two runs.

Nashville, Tennessee

The defending champion Vanderbilt took advantage of six Radford errors to romp 21-0. Zander Wiel drove in six runs, falling a double short of the cycle with his four hits. Leadoff hitter Ro Coleman scored four runs on a 4 for 5 day.

Louisville, Kentucky

Louisville had an easy time over Michigan 13-4. Nick Solak and Corey Ray each drove in three runs for Louisville.

Fullerton California

Cal State Fullerton had an easy time against Pepperdine, beating them 10-1, the second time they had beat them in the double elimination regionals. Connor Seabold pitched six shutout innings to get the win.
