Taiwan Defeats the United States in University Games

Taiwan rallied for two runs in the top of the tenth to defeat the United States 5-3 in the University Games in Korea. The United States did come back the next day with five runs in the eighth to knock out Mexico 7-3. Tanner Pinkston, Taylor Bryant and Joshua Vargas each had two RBIs for the United States.

Taiwan remained undefeated in their pool play with a 5-3 win over the Czech Republic. They scored two runs in the eighth and added a walk off two run homer by Tai-Chun Yang to win the game. It was only the second homerun in the tournament. Tzu-Peng Huang pitched six plus innings of shutout relief to give Taiwan an opportunity to win.

Korea recovered from their opening day loss to Japan with a 14-0 win over China and a 12-0 victory over France to advance to the playoffs. Jae-Young Kim and Dong-Hyun Choi combined for a perfect game seven inning no hitter in the game against China, Kim working the first five innings. Korean pitchers did allow two hits against France in another seven inning game.

Japan shutout France 10-0 to remain the other undefeated team in pool play.

The standings in pool play:

Pool A Japan (3-0), Korea (2-1), China (1-2), France (0-3)

Pool B Taiwan (3-0), United States (2-1), Czech Republic (1-2), Mexico (0-3)

Japan will battle the United States and Taiwan will play Korea in a single elimination game, with the two winners of these games playing for the championship.
