Taiwan and Japan to Play in Universiade Finals

The United States team was trampled by a persistent Japanese team 8-0. Tatsuhiro Shibata stitched together two hits and a walk to cross the plate three times. Eigoro Mogi and Masataka Yoshida each drove in two runs. Yuya Yanagi only allowed one hit in his four plus innings of work, but was a little wild and walked four. Kazutomo Iguchi relieved him with two outs in the fifth and extended the shutout to the seventh inning.

Taiwan eliminated the hosts Korea 2-0. Po-Jung Wang went deep in the sixth inning to give Taiwan two of the three homeruns in the tournament. He leads all players with six RBIs for the tournament. Min-Hsun Chang drove in the first run with a single in the fifth. Chia-Hao Sung went one out into the sixth inning to pick up the win, allowing the Korean bats to collect three hits off him. Tzu-Wei Lin finished the game off with three plus innings, striking out seven.

In a fifth place match China knocked off Mexico 5-4. China broke a 2-2 tie with three in the eighth. Xiaolei Du drove in three runs for China. Jianzeng Sun pitched four innings of scoreless relief to pick up his second win of the tournament.

In a European battle the Czechs defeated France 10-8, scoring three in the seventh to overcome a 8-7 deficit. Jan Tomek shut down the French bats for the last three plus innings to pick up the win. The Czech Republic will play China for fifth place while France will do battle with Mexico to escape the bottom ranking.

The United States will play Korea for the third place finish.
