Mejia Goes Deep Thrice for Seven RBIs

Ernesto Mejia hit three homeruns for the Seibu Lions, driving in all seven runs to lead the Lions over the Rakuten Golden Eagles 7-6. Mejia walked in the first inning then began his homer barrage in the third inning with a simple solo shot. In the fifth he connected on a two run blast and he iced the game in the seventh with a grand slam, after Rakuten had scored five runs in the top of the inning to take a 6-3 lead.

Mejia was a first base prospect with the Atlanta Braves behind Freddie Freeman a couple years ago. The Seibu Lions convinced him to take his craft to Japan. In 2014 he slugged 34 homeruns with a .290 average. Last year he encountered a bit of a slump, hitting just .235 with his homerun rate dropping to 27. Despite the drop in offensive numbers his RBI total went up, from 73 to 89. The three homerun barrage Friday night upped Ernesto’s 2016 total to 8 homeruns with a bating average of .347, both numbers good enough to lead the Pacific League. His 26 RBIs in 24 games leads the Pacific League by seven giving him the early lead for a Triple Crown win.
