Nishikawa Slam Gives Fighters Sweep at Home

Haruki Nishikawa slugged a two out grand slam homerun to give the Nippon Ham Fighters a 5-1 win over the Hiroshima Carp and a sweep at home to take a 3-2 series lead in the Japan Series. Luis Mendoza threw 5.2 innings of shutout relief after starter Takayuki Kato struggled early with his command, giving up four hits and two walks in just over one inning of work.

Kris Johnson got the start for Hiroshima and pitched six innings of shutout ball. The Fighters scored their first run in the seventh inning when the Carp went to the bullpen, Hiromi Oka driving in the run with a sacrifice fly to tie the game 1-1.

The two teams combined for a series high seven sacrifice bunts, with a sacrifice bunt occurring in all the innings in which a run was scored. Anthony Bass got the win for the Fighters with his one inning of shutout relief work.
