Gigantes Wins Opener

The only winter league playoff game was being played in the Dominican Republic. Gigantes ruled over Aguilas with a convincing 5-1 win in the finals of the Winter League playoffs. Cesar Valdes lasted five innings, allowing just two hits for Gigantes. One of those hits was a solo shot by Francisco Pena.

The Gigantes did not homer but they strung together 11 hits to score five runs. Ronald Guzman hit two doubles and scored twice. Kelvin Gutierrez went 3 for 4 with two runs drive in. One player who struggled was Oneil Cruz, who struck out in all four of his at bats, stranding six baserunners. Fortunately, the Gigantes survived without his bat.

Four different relief pitchers for Gigantes each worked one inning of shutout ball. Jumbo Diaz worked the last inning, retiring the Aguilas bats in order. Joe Van Meter struggled for Aguilas, failing to get past the second inning after giving up six hits and three runs.
