Bruins Bury Stoney Brook in College World Series Opener
UCLA 9 Stoney Brook 1
The Cinderella Seawolves got a rough taste of reality in their match against the Bruins, Tyler Johnson getting spanked for five runs in the opening frame and being devoured by the Bruins 9-1. Johnson had trouble finding the plate, walking four in less than three innings of work. The Bruins Adam Plutko had no issues, other than a solo homerun from Pat Cantwell in the third, working seven innings to get the win. The first five Bruin hitters got on base against Johnson with Jeff Gelalich providing the key hit, a 2-run single.
Arizona 4 Florida State 3
It took them twelve innings, but back to back doubles by Joey Rickard and Johnny Field scored the go ahead run to give the Wildcats a 4-3 win over the Seminoles. Mathew Troupe pitched two plus innings of work to get the win, giving up only one hit and striking out three. He hit a batter in the 12th, allowing him to advance to third with two out, but struck out the final batter. The two doubles by Rickard and Field were the only extra base hits collected by the Wildcat offense. Sherman Johnson had a solo homerun for Florida State in the third.
Stoney Brook and Florida State will now play in the losers bracket while UCLA will play their Pac 10 rival Arizona.
